South Korean conductor & composer Hyun-Jin Yun is rapidly emerging as one of the most exciting musicians of his generation.
Since October 2017, Yun is Assistant Conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul, with whom he regularly conducts outreach symphonic & educational concerts, and also contemporary music programs, especially for the development of Korean new music. He recently conducted with KBS Symphony 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics Cultural Festival, the premiere of his composition «Kșaṇa» for Samul-Nori and Orchestra (2018) in Lotte Concert Hall.
Since his debut as conductor & composer with Tonkünstler-Orchester at the Grafenegg Festival, Yun has worked with many orchestras in Europe, including WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Hamburger Symphoniker, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, George Enescu Bucharest Philharmonic, Lorraine National Orchestra, Radio France Philharmonic, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, among others. He was also invited to conduct at several festivals in Romania and Russia.
Yun is the Winner of the 3rd International Conducting Competition «Jeunesses Musicales Bucharest» in 2012 where he also received Special Award of the Orchestra (George Enescu Philharmonic). He also took 2nd place at the International Competition for Young Conductors “Jovens Maestro” in Lisbon and was a quarter-finalist at the 53 Concours international de jeunes chefs d’orchestre de Besancon.
As a composer, Yun won several awards at numerous international competitions, including 2015 WDR Orchester-Werkstatt in Cologne, Grafenegg Composition Prize, 7th. ARKO (Arts Council Korea) Composition Festival in Seoul, 3rd. International Composition Competition of the City of Homburg in Germany, amongst others. His compositions have been performed by WDR Symphony Orchestra in Cologne, Tonkünstler-Orchestra, KBS Symphony Orchestra, Gyeonggi Philharmonic, Seong-Nam Philharmonic and Ensemble TIMF in Korea.
Yun studied composition and conducting at Hanyang University in Seoul. He completed his Master of Music in conducting at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Mannheim with Prof. Klaus Arp and post-graduate studies (Konzertexamen) in conducting with highest distinction at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg with Prof. Ulrich Windfuhr. During his studies, he received scholarships from Oscar and Vera Ritter-Foundation and Franz-Wirth-Memorial-Foundation in Hamburg.
Yun was formerly Artistic Director of the University Orchestra at the Leuphana University Lüneburg, Principal Conductor of the Junge Marburger Philharmonie in Germany and Music Director of the contemporary music series at the Korean Culture Centre in Berlin.
Yun participated in master class with maestro Martyn Brabbins, Myung-Whun Chung, Peter Eötvös, Thierry Fischer, Alan Gilbert, Bernard Haitink, Christian Jost, Kurt Masur, James McMillan, Markus Stenz and Hans Zender, and Unsuk Chin.
